Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice
by Derek of RotoPicks.com
Daily fantasy baseball can be one of the most exciting, addicting activities you can find, but it is also full of plenty of gurus that know their smallball and will gladly take your money if you don't know what you are doing. In order to do well in daily fantasy baseball, you have to know the ins and outs of picking a team and all the necessary steps it takes each day to put out the best possible lineup. In other articles, we have gone over strategies, how to research statistics, what to look for each day, and even the different types of leagues you can join. Today we are going to go over a few pieces of advice that every daily fantasy baseball player needs to know:
Keep Track of Player's Salary Changes
All of the major daily sports sites such as Fanduel are constantly changing their salaries of the players. Most sites will change player's salaries every single day based on recent performance. In order for you to be ahead of the curve, it is critical to stay on top of these changes. An example is an All-Star hitter such as Miguel Cabrera; one day he could be very expensive and the next he could be extremely affordable. The only way to get an edge is to take the time to look over every single player's salary every day.
Keep Track of Hitter's Order in the Batting Lineup
Like I've said before, baseball is a constantly changing sport from day to day. Teams will sit guys out due to certain matchups, teams have different batting orders for different matchups and teams will mix up their batting order just to shake things up. Make sure that your players are batting in a good position. The 3, 4, and 5 spots are always my favorite but really any spot in the order from 1-6 is decent. You can also take this a bit further by looking at a prospective player and making sure that he's being "protected" in the lineup by a good hitter behind him to assure that your player won't get "pitched around."
Always Research Your Pitcher's Splits
Selecting a pitcher can be the hardest and most important decision that you make each day, especially if you are playing on a site that only allows you to have one starting pitcher. It is extremely important to research your pitching options splits every day. A few key splits that you want to look at are home vs. away numbers, the ball park the pitcher will be playing in, the weather, batter vs. pitcher stats and the vegas odds for that game. If Vegas thinks that your pitcher is going to lose, you might want to consider a different option. If he's listed as a big favorite (-150 odds or above) there's a pretty fair chance that he'll do well. An even better telltale is a pitcher listed at -200 odds and with a low game total of 7 or less.
Take the Time to Choose a Good Closer
If you play on a site that makes you pick a relief pitcher, don't just randomly throw in a guy and hope that he gets a save. While picking a good closer does require a lot of luck, there are certain things you can look at to help you better your odds. Try to pick a closer in a game that you think will be close and low scoring. A quick check of the sportsbook lines can help you narrow down your options.
Know When to Use the Stack and When Not To
Stacking a team can be beneficial if you are trying to win a large field tournament, but if you are playing head to heads and trying to grind out a profit each day, then stay away from stacks because the variance on them is too high. But if you like to play GPP's and go for the big cashouts, then a stack might not be the worst option because you have the opportunity to put up a lot of points if you can pick the right team to stack.
