Daily Fantasy Baseball Strategy: Head to Head Leagues
by Derek of RotoPicks.com
When it comes to daily fantasy baseball, you have to find a strategy that works for you and you have to stick to it. One of the hardest things to get used to is the idea that you aren't going to win every single day; you are going to have good days and bad days and you can't let that affect how you play. If you find a strategy that works, give it some time before you give up on it. This article is going to give you a basic strategy that will help you when making a team each day.
This article is going to focus on making a team on Draftstreet for head to head leagues, but it applies to other sites as well. The first part of your strategy is to figure out a goal for your team to score each day so that you can manage your team to try to hit that goal. You want to set a goal that will win you more leagues than you lose. On Draftstreet baseball, the magic number for a salary cap league is usually around 50 fantasy points. If you can consistently score 50 or more fantasy points every day, then you will find yourself ahead and you will be able to grind out a profit.
Now that you have a goal, the question is how to pick teams that will score that many points each night. On Draftstreet, you have a salary of $100,000 to spend on your team, so by using quick math, in order to score 50 fantasy points, you need to score 1 fantasy point for every $2,000 of salary ($100,000/50 = $2,000). This knowledge can be extremely helpful because you can take each player on a case by case basis and decide whether they are worth their salary. Basically, you need a player to score half as many points as their salary. So if a certain player costs $10,000, then you need him to score 5 fantasy points in order for your team to get to the goal of 50.
Now that you have an idea of how many points you need from each player, it is time to do some research. This is the most important step each day and I've gone into further detail in a few of my other articles here at RotoPicks.com. You need to study batter vs. pitcher stats, daily lineups, and the weather. If you combine all of this research with your general rule of thumb that a player needs to score half as much as his salary, you will be able to find good value in players every single day. Once you find players that you like, all you have to do is check out their salary and determine if you think they can score enough points for them to be worth taking. Note: Often times a star player will have an inflated salary. As tough as it is to do, often times it's best to avoid these players because it's tough for them to meet their value (score half as many points as their salary).
The next important part of a strategy is to study the site's scoring system that you play on. You have to know the exact scoring for every single statistic so that you can use it to your advantage. For instance, you might be deciding between two guys, one that strikes out a lot and has a little bit more power, or a guy that doesn't strike out that much that has less power. Assuming that they have a similar matchup, which one is the better play? It all depends on which site you play on.
For instance, on Draftstreet their scoring penalizes batters for striking out, so it might be better to take the player that strikes out less. However, on Fanduel, they treat any out as the same, so you might want to think about taking the player that has more power because even if he strikes out, it won't penalize you any more than if he grounded out.
Another example is pitching. On Draftstreet, they reward pitchers for strikeouts more than anything else so you want to make sure to take pitchers that get a lot of strikeouts. On the other hand, Fanduel gives you the most points for a pitcher that gets the win. So it's important to study your fantasy baseball betting site's scoring system so that you can know what type of players are most beneficial to draft.
At the end of the day, if you have a solid strategy that you use every day, you are going to be much better off than if you don't. Make sure to research each day and look for players that provide good value.
