Daily Fantasy Baseball Strategy: Pay to Learn

What do you suppose would happen if you walked into the NASA human resources center and told them you wanted to be an astronaut? Or how about walking into a hospital and wanting to be a Doctor? What do you think they'd say to you? They'd want to know what your qualifications were, namely your education. Being a winning daily/weekly fantasy sports player is no different. You need to be educated to be the man for the job. This article will talk about an unconvential, sneaky, effective way to put your fantasy education into high gear to achieve success in this endeavor without having to enroll in a university and spend 8 years in doing so.
When I first started playing daily fantasy sports, I was absolutely baffled. I'm a winning sports handicapper by trade, so this proposition seemed like it'd be a breeze to transition into and conquer. Man was I wrong. Sports handicapping is a muddle puddle compared to daily fantasy sports, which is more comparative to a 100 foot deep well. One really needs to take the breakdown of matchups to an entirely new level. This has made me a better handicapper as well, so you're in the double bonus there if you bet on games.

My first endeavor was an ironic one. Baseball, my strongest sport knowledge-wise, was my first introduction to getting my arse handed to me. How could this be? Nobody knows more about baseball than I do. (Ok, that's a bit of a stretch, but you get my point.) So, if something isn't working, you can't just sit there and keep repeating the process. It's too damned expensive and I'd be better off flushing my cash down a toilet or handing it out to the bums which seemingly lurk at every freeway exit these days.
It didn't take long for me to realize that I was doing something wrong. I studied like hell, so that wasn't the issue. I knew all about each player, so that wasn't the problem. Home/Road stats are overstated, so it wasn't that. I was baffled.
Then it all came to me... Like college, it was time for me to pay for an education. I started researching who the big guns were at the big DFS sites.
I then went into the salary cap section of the sites and looked for H2H matchups. I was pleased to see that some of the sharks don't discriminate in who they beat up. The big winners on the site were not only enrolled in the highroller games, they were leaving themselves exposed to micro games with entry fees as small as 5 dollars
I was eager to enter these matchups on a daily basis so that I could see who these guys were drafting. My plan was to take notes on their selections and then reverse engineer the players, digging into every nook and cranny that I could find with hopes of figuring out why these players were so attractive to the fantasy sharks.
I did so on a daily basis for a couple weeks. The sharks don't always take the same players, so it wasn't that. They sure as hell aren't taking their favorite players either (this is obvious, I'm just trying to be funny.) They were surely doing their homework to figure out which matchups were most beneficial. I'm sure they were using hitter vs. pitcher info as well as "hotness" and other variables, but it was more than that. It was SUPER DUPER deep drilling of statistical analysis. These dirty dogs were taking hitters that each had protection in their lineup, many were never allowing for a righty vs. righty or lefty vs. lefty matchup, a few were only taking players who played on their home fields, while others were only selecting hitters who batted in the top 5 of their team's respective lineup, in order to grind out every single at bat possible. That's a pretty smart rule of thumb, as many H2H fantasy baseball games come down to final at bats. I won't even mention that most of the players they were taking were enjoying recent success. That's too shallow for this conversation.
Anyhoo, I think you see my point, which is that I'm recommending that you "donate" to the guys you see on the leaderboard, study the heck out of their lineups, reverse engineer them, take notes and gain wisdom. A cheap price to pay for an education from the pros!
And then there's the flip side of this conversation. Increase your odds of winning at daily fantasy by staying the hell away from anybody on the leaderboards.
